American Panoramas: The Salton Sea
Friday, November 14th, 2008
© Will Pearson 2008
The Salton Sea is an incredible place. An enormous inland sea, created by accident when irrigation went hopelessly wrong. The Americans did their best to make good of the disaster, marketing the Salton Sea as a holiday destination - which worked for a while.

I had time to spend visiting some of Southern California’s glorious beaches (Venice Beach, Santa Monica Beach and Malibu Beach to name a few that I remember!). These virtual tours and panoramas show some of the views on these famous beaches.

New panoramic views over London from Greenwich

I thought I’d add in one of my latest shots - it’s a panoramic view over London with the Old Royal Naval College in the foreground. Alongside the more obvious landmarks like the O2 Arena, Canary Wharf, The Gherkin and Tower 42 are the landmarks that you don’t see straight away, like Tower Bridge or St Paul’s Cathedral. And check out the number of cranes to see how fast the London skyline is changing.
Portfolio: New ‘Zoomable’ Panoramas

Increasingly I am shooting images at an incredibly high resolution and so the file sizes are massive. This means that it’s difficult to display them online in a way which does them justice. I have introduced a new section on the site which aims to show the files bigger than before, so people can zoom in and see the details.

Panoramic Images from Shanghai, China
Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

I’m back from exhibiting at the 9th Shanghai International Photographic Art Exhibition in China, and it was a pretty incredible experience. I was able to spend a few days travelling around Shanghai and the outskirts as well as spending time at the exhibition. We had a fairly hectic press conference, at which I discovered that I’m far happier on one side of the lens than the other! So somewhere I’m appearing on Chinese TV - but I’ve no idea where, so if anyone sees me, let me know! I’ve put a couple of Shanghai panoramas live on the Will Pearson site and will add more over the coming weeks and months.
I’ve also recently returned from California, where I was shooting some new Yungfuktoi fetish fashion images at an amazing underground location in Downtown LA. I’ll be adding those in the not too distant future.

I have been selected to join some of the UK’s leading photographers at the 9th Shanghai International Photographic Art Exhibition, which is a really exciting opportunity. The Yungfuktoi series will be included in the exhibition, along with another collection of panoramas. I am travelling out to China for the exhibition this Summer, and hope to be able to do a new series in Shanghai while I’m there. I’ll update the blog with images from Shanghai as soon as I can, so watch this space.

Siemens Commission
Friday, February 1st, 2008
All images © Will Pearson.
I spent much of November and early December shooting a commission for Siemens in the UK for their Annual Review of 2007. The shot above is one of the commissioned shots, from the offshore wind farm at Burbo Banks in Liverpool, I also shot plaster and glass factories, Great Ormond Street Hospital’s MRI unit, London Underground, the Welsh Assembly, a water treatment plant, the M25 and Siemens HQ in Surrey! They also chose to use a number of my existing shots. You can download a PDF of the Review here: http://www.siemens.co.uk/en/about_us/index/annualreview.htm
And you can also see some of the other images on my portfolio pages.
The Burning Man Festival, Black Rock City, Nevada
Sunday, September 16th, 2007
All images © Will Pearson.
Whilst in California I visited the Burning Man Festival in Nevada - an event which is almost impossible to describe. Black Rock City is an entirely temporary city which springs up for a week for the Burning Man festival, and then vanishes, leaving no trace on the hard dust bed of the desert (the playa). The rule of the festival is that there are no spectators, everyone must participate, whether that’s though incredible constructions, outlandish costumes or performance skills - this creates a unique ‘anything goes’ atmosphere. This effect is increased by the other rule - no money must change hands; everyone tries to help out everyone else. And despite this sounding unworkable, it in fact works beautifully (though there were some tricky moments when my companion was asked to ‘drop’ certain items of clothing as ‘collateral’ to borrow a pen!).
This panorama shows the city seen from the desert side - you can see more panoramas of Burning Man and Black Rock City in my portfolio.

In September, I travelled to California to shoot, and had the opportunity to travel around shooting my own stuff too. This panorama shows the view over Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
Trafalgar Square Turfed

‘Visit London’ bought in turf from the Vale of York and used it to turn Trafalgar Square into a green space for a couple of days. The first panorama shows the effects of the night before, with the grass covered in litter. In the second panorama, Will has used his expert retouching skills to clean up the turf so it is once again more village green than Glastonbury!

Trip to Chennai, India
Monday, May 7th, 2007
All images © Will Pearson.
On a recent trip to Chennai to shoot for a commission I managed to get a few days off to explore for myself. Chennai (formerly Madras) is an industrial city on the south-eastern Indian coast. Despite its commercial significance, it’s also well known for its cultural heritage and temple architecture. The coastline was badly hit by the 2004 Tsunami, with more than 200 dead, and many more displaced and losing their livelihoods. Chennai is a vibrant city, and it was a delight to spend a few days exploring.
