The term gigapixel refers to images made up from a billion pixels, but it has widened to incorporate all ultra-high-resolution images. What matters in practice is not the pixel count but what the resolution lets you do: crop a single frame many different ways, print it at architectural scale, or hand it to a production to use as a background plate.

These images are shot to be examined closely. Zoom in and the detail holds — individual windows, figures on a bridge, the weather over the estuary. That is the point of working this way, and it is why the same capture can serve a gallery print, a licence and an LED volume without being reshot.
