20 Fenchurch Street
20 Fenchurch Street is one of the most recognisable buildings in the City of London. It was completed in 2014 and designed by architect Rafael Viñoly. The building quickly became known by its nickname, ‘the Walkie Talkie’, for the way its curved form broadens towards the top.
Rising 160 metres above Fenchurch Street, it is central in shaping the City of London’s skyline, alongside the Lloyds Building, the Gherkin and the Leadenhall Building.
Photographing 20 Fenchurch Street reveals how its glass and steel surfaces interact with the surrounding city. The building’s distinctive shape reflects the sky and surrounding city. From ground level the curve feels imposing, while from a distance it creates a gentle contrast against the sharper lines of nearby structures. These shifts in light and perspective make it a rewarding subject for gigapixel photography.
The upper levels of the building contain the Sky Garden. This is an indoor garden and viewing area open to the public. From here, visitors can see across London in every direction, from the Thames and South Bank to the far edge of the City. Since opening, 20 Fenchurch Street has become a familiar part of the skyline. Its presence reflects the continuing evolution of London’s architecture and the city’s constant renewal through design and imagination.
