City of London Photos
‘Lambent London’ was photographed from the summit of 30 St Mary Axe, better known as The Gherkin. From this height, City of London photos can reveal the intricate mix of historic and contemporary architecture that defines the Square Mile. The image forms part of my series of high-resolution panoramas documenting the evolving City of London & London skyline.
Light that transforms the city
When setting up a shoot from a tall building, it’s easy to become absorbed in the technicalities. The kit, the back-up in case of equipment failure, the technical process, waiting for the right weather, there’s much to plan for. And then, there are moments of pure magic for me, when the light is briefly quite startling and London is transformed into a city steeped in colour.
Capturing that fleeting illumination is one of the great challenges. When shooting City of London photos, there’s often a time pressure and rarely a second chance.
360s from St Mary Axe
This particular image is a taken from a series of 360 panoramic shoots from the top of 30 St Mary Axe (the Gherkin). Click to see the final St Mary Axe 360s. They give the viewer a unique perspective – City of London photos from the top one of its most iconic buildings.
Every surface and reflection is visible in fine detail, revealing how light reshapes even the most familiar skyline. Lambent London is both a study of light and a technical exploration of City of London photography. To see more examples of London panoramas, visit the portfolio .
