Yosemite National Park 360 – On the Merced River
The Merced River in California runs for 145 miles from the Sierra Nevada down to the San Joaquin Valley and is responsible for the shape of Yosemite valley today. The river was part of the California Gold Rush, with Americans panning for gold in hope of making their fortunes. It’s the main river in Yosemite National Park, and runs swiftly and steeply though the valley. In summer though, its character is a little more leisurely. We arrived at the river and, taking our shoes and socks off, were able to wade to the other side, carrying the camera equipment above our heads. It’s wonderfully clear and shallow in summer, making this jaunt across possible. In contrast, this easy foot crossing wouldn’t be possible in spring with a fuller, faster River.
